Beverly Hills, 90210

If you watch as much television as I do, by now you’ve heard the big news from the WB: “Beverly Hills, 90210” is coming back. Though show’s creator, Aaron Spelling, has moved to a more sacred zip code, the good news is the updated version is rumored to have at least two actors reprising their original roles. “Beverly Hills, 90210” was such a monster hit, the updated version has the opportunity to make teenaged lightning strike twice. My excitement for the return of the show not only lies in the fact that we’ll soon get a chance to revisit West Beverly High, but more importantly, I’m thrilled that I can once again proudly display my vast array of original “90210” merchandise.

“90210” may have been the biggest merchandising boom of the ‘90s. There were so many items both officially licensed and loosely based on the show that you could pave a road from 90210 to 10010 in both directions with it all. Some were practical products like school products - including notebooks, notepads, backpacks and pencil bags and messenger bags. Others were positively glamorous, like the exclusive line of 90210 make-up and perfumes. There were charm bracelets, hair care products, bedding, clothing and a variety of shoes.

Among the most popular from the “90210” line were the dolls made by Mattel. There were five of them made; Dylan, Brandon, Brenda, Kelly and Donna. Dylan, Brandon and Brenda also came in a handy three-pack while Donna and Kelly were released in less copious numbers. The accompanying Peach Pit Play Set was released in limited markets and even more scarce was the 4x4 cruiser, a toy jeep for the dolls to ride up and down your own imaginary Rodeo Drive.

My personal favorite of the “90210” items was the storage boxes. They are very handy for storing all the “90210” magazines, games and trading cards that I accumulated. I use my mini “90210” hair dryer when I travel and also keep a 90120 scrunchie in my gym bag in case I need to tie up my hair. I have also been known to wear my “90210” wrist watch, and I keep a “90210” baseball cap handy in case I need to cover my head. The list goes on and on.

I’m hoping the new “90210” is popular enough to spawn its own lunch box to add to the collection or at least some updated fashions for the dolls. Brandon does look fabulous in his Peach Pit uniform (which was sold separately) but Kelly & Donna’s Betsy Johnson-inspired mini dresses are looking a little dated. I’m looking forward to the new designated classifications of “the new 90210” and “90210 Classic” and marking my “90120” day-planner for the September debut.

--Lisa Sutton

June 1, 2008

Message Edited by Lisa_Sutton on 06-10-2008 07:14 AM

Message Edited by TVLTheLink on 07-12-2008 07:26 AM
