Adults should be able to recognize the need for public decorum and civility. Unfortunately, not all make that recognition. The Terms of Use try to help them with a very specific admonition against language which is derogatory of another user. That rule wouldn't be necessary if individuals could remember to keep their disagreements to discussion of opposing positions. It's not being treated like children. It is holding you to the standards that adults in a community should maintain out of respect for each other. P.S. If you have a personal "tiff," then keep it personal and off a public forum. Handle it like an adult instead of a child needing an audience.

There should be much more leeway for speaking our minds and for disagreeing with eachother. We shouldn't have to be the bleepin buddy bears just to be allowed to participate and we shouldnt have to limit our converstaions to mindless drivel --- and I enjoy the mindless drivel but we shouldn't be limited to it !
