I was born and raised in the south

where the four seasons were never a doubt

than I had a need to go away

had things to do and could not stay

and for years I was in places

out and about going through my paces

that did not for some reasons

really did have the entire seasons

ten years in Southern California had me sedate

only to pack it all in and head to Washington State

one September day while working in the yard

something touched my senses and smacked them hard

what was that smell that odor that scent

in the far reaches of my mind I detected a hint

something from long ago

something I did so know

what could it be

than it struck me

that's it don't you see

AUTUMN

I smelled autumn

that very smell took me back to my childhood

of things I missed that I never thought I would

it's a smell I couldn't somehow describe

something remembered from times past

something remembered again at last

while I love the spring

and still think summer is king

autumn brings back thoughts of old

and showers us with colors bold

though I not autumn crazy truth be told

since it is autumn that ushers in the cold

and I don't like cold

my kind of weather

the hotter the better

so welcome autumn

good to see you fall

just don't expect me to sing

which all in all might be a good thing
